A Unique Gift
So it was Junior’s 4th birthday a few weeks ago. And as usual (since he’s the only child Mama & Papa has) he was spoiled with many many gifts. Papa however wanted to give a unique gift. A gift which would be more than just a toy.
I remember when I was a child, my parents bought me a set of meccano with metal pieces of various shapes and tons of nuts & bolts. I spent ages creating different structures and vehicles, only using my imagination as design. After a few years I upgraded to Lego Technic and continued creating stuff. Fast forward another few years and would spend time with a Bicycle mechanic learning how to fix bikes. From there I moved on to tuning scooters (and watching for the police while I drove these highly illegal scooters) and finally upgraded to cars.
Till this day Papa still messes around with car mechanics, electronics, bodywork you name it. Now that I’m married, the interest has grown to include the house, such as plumbing, electrics, brick work, etc. Today I work as an Architect, which was a natural career for me due to the above.
There is not much I can’t do, and what I can’t do I am eager to learn. My interest and the acquired skills over time all started with that mechano set and the stimulation I got from creating and designing stuff. And I want to give the same gift to my son which my parents gave to me.
So I bought a large box of mix Lego (not to be mistaken with duplo blocks – see picture for difference between ordinary Lego (small pieces) and Duplo (large pieces)) that would allow Junior to create things out of free imagination. And surely, without a doubt, it’s the gift that Mama, Papa & Junior has spent the most time with after his birthday.
I don’t care if Junior walks in Papa’s footsteps or not, I just want him to feel the acknowledgement & accomplishment of “I Created This”. Truly, these feelings can make you grow beyond many boundaries.
Cool blog with great info
